Headed to Havana 2012!

Last summer the U-14 Boys Key West Striker Soccer team traveled to Havana to play in the first ever "Key West - Havana Copa Amistad Soccer Tournament". It was an amazing experience for the 13 players and 12 chaperones who were lucky enough to take part!
We're very excited that this year we have been granted permission by the United States Treasury Department to send three teams to the tournament this year.
On Saturday, July 7, 2012 a U-14 boys team, a U-14 girls team and a U-12 boys team will represent the Key West Strikers in the "Second Annual Key West - Havana Copa Amistad Soccer Tournament".
We're excited and proud to represent Key West and the United States!
We plan to share our experiences both on and off the soccer pitch through updates to this blog throughout the 10 days.

Trip Wrap Up

There's truly no place like home!  Back in Key West after an amazing experience in Havana.

We asked every player and chaperone "What was your favorite part of the Cuba trip?" and we wanted to share their responses:
Spencer - Meeting all of the kids, exchanging gifts and taking pictures with all my new amigos after the last game.
Patrick - I loved playing in the soccer games.  The Cuban teams were very well conditioned and had terrific ball skills.
Danny - Playing against the best teams in Cuba.
Eric - I loved doing something that no one else has been able to do - coming to Cuba and playing soccer on Cuban soil.
Ali - I liked the hike down to the banos where we ate roasted pig.
Adam - Taking on the challenge of playing some of the best players in Cuba.
Dylan- I liked all the old cars in Cuba.  I liked playing against the Havana teams.  It was exciting to play more experienced teams.
Kody - Playing against such competitive teams.  Getting to play against players like Roberto Hernandez, Cuba's Player of the Year and a starter on the Portuguese National Team.
Kevin - My favorite thing was the walk to the waterfall and seeing the very different lifestyles people have compared to people in the United States.
Brian - Seeing that soccer anywhere is the same.
Jack - Seeing players on our team realize that when you play teams at this level you can't just dribble through them like in AYSO.  Seeing the fundamentals of the game at play in Cuba.
Noah - Playing against Cuban teams and learning new styles of playing.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mario - the old architecture of Old Havana, the old cars and the fort.
Mike - watching the Women's World Cup Final at the Hemingway Marina
Evo - becoming friends with the bus drivers little boy, Renaldo.  Even thought we didn't speak the same language - it didn't matter.  We were able to communicate and get to know each other.
Perry - Old Havana...seeing all the old cars, buildings and architecture
Judy - getting the opportunity to see Old Havana as it is now, the warmth and friendliness of the Cuban people, how organized the tournament was, how touching the opening and closing ceremonies were and getting to watch a little bit of a Cuban baseball tournament.
Jane - seeing the Cuban players and American players lined up behind their flags and singing their National Anthems, the incredibly warm welcome speech from the Cuban Soccer Federation president and closing ceremonies with all the players exchanging gifts, handshakes and hugs and wanting their pictures taken with our players.
Shaun - talking to the Cuban soccer kids - they were so excited to see me trying to speak Spanish and they were excited to talk about soccer.
Herb - the camaraderie between players and the camaraderie between the parents.  The whole experience on and off the field was fantastic.
Lilla - the interactions with the Cuban soccer moms, the trip to Banos de San Juan, and how generous the boys were in wanting to give away jerseys, gifts, etc...to their new Cuban friends.
Nancy - seeing the countryside on the way to Pinar del Rio and the Banos de San Juan, opening ceremonies and the National Anthems and the interactions with the Cuban soccer moms
Coach Tom - Opening and closing ceremonies, seeing the kids so excited, overall the trip went very well - we held our own against some very good soccer teams.  I'm very hopeful that this can become an annual trip for Key West teams.
