Key West took on team Playa this morning the last day of the First Annual Copa - Amistad Tournament. The Strikers came out firing and scored early when Adam Swiecicki was tripped in the box and scored on his penalty kick. Early in the second half Jack Behmke headed in a Patrick Matysik corner kick for a 2-0 lead. A little while later it was deja vu....a Jack Behmke score off a Patrick Matysik corner kick!!! Key West went on to win 3-0. It was an awesome end to a spectacular experience!
A brief closing ceremony took place after the games with Tom Coward giving a short speech in spanish expressing his appreciation for the incredible hospitality that has been shown to us as well as reiterating his hope that this will be the first of many such trips for Key West teams.
The tournament results were:
Team Marianao
Team Cerro
Key West Strikers
Team Plaza
Team Playa
After the closing ceremony the players crowded on the field exchanging gifts, handshakes and high fives and taking lots of photos.
Check back later for pictures and trip wrap up!
Headed to Havana 2012!
Last summer the U-14 Boys Key West Striker Soccer team traveled to Havana to play in the first ever "Key West - Havana Copa Amistad Soccer Tournament". It was an amazing experience for the 13 players and 12 chaperones who were lucky enough to take part!
We're very excited that this year we have been granted permission by the United States Treasury Department to send three teams to the tournament this year.
On Saturday, July 7, 2012 a U-14 boys team, a U-14 girls team and a U-12 boys team will represent the Key West Strikers in the "Second Annual Key West - Havana Copa Amistad Soccer Tournament".
We're excited and proud to represent Key West and the United States!
We plan to share our experiences both on and off the soccer pitch through updates to this blog throughout the 10 days.
