Day 2 of the Copa Amistad Tournament....Key West Strikers vs. Team Marianao. After a tight 20 minutes of futbol Marianao broke the scoring drought with a goal right before half time. Marianao followed up that with a second goal shortly after the break and despite a great effort on both sides of the ball the Strikers were not able to match Mariana's intensity and the game ended with a Marianao win 2-0. Coach Tom Coward told his players after the game to keep their heads up and that team Marianao is considered by many to be the best youth team in Havana. He advised the players to rest, relax and above all stay hydrated to be ready for tomorrow's soccer match vs. Cerro.
We got to the field early today to watch the first match of the day between team Cerro and team Playa. It was so much fun to see the Cuban parents and supporters so enthusiastically cheering on their teams. The Key West parents really got into the spirit of things cheering alongside the Cuban spectators, ringing the cowbell, and playing the vuvuzela. When it comes to passion for futbol - we really do all speak the same language!!
Headed to Havana 2012!
Last summer the U-14 Boys Key West Striker Soccer team traveled to Havana to play in the first ever "Key West - Havana Copa Amistad Soccer Tournament". It was an amazing experience for the 13 players and 12 chaperones who were lucky enough to take part!
We're very excited that this year we have been granted permission by the United States Treasury Department to send three teams to the tournament this year.
On Saturday, July 7, 2012 a U-14 boys team, a U-14 girls team and a U-12 boys team will represent the Key West Strikers in the "Second Annual Key West - Havana Copa Amistad Soccer Tournament".
We're excited and proud to represent Key West and the United States!
We plan to share our experiences both on and off the soccer pitch through updates to this blog throughout the 10 days.
